The sequels, while they certainly have a lot of issues, kind of add to all of that and give a conclusion by showing how the main family in the series comes to an end. They helped the whole series to feel like a huge dramatic Greek tragedy.
I think that the prequels were really cool, and I really liked how they put the original trilogy in perspective. For me, the best movies are 3, Rogue One, 6, and 8. I think Rogue One is one of the the best Star Wars movies, but I'm not sure if it's the best. Rogue One didn't either, and for that I deem it the only worthy addition to the pantheon.Įven though I love all of the Star Wars movies, I definitely see where you're coming from. The first three films never treated me like a tourist. Yeah everyone's flying around in cool spaceships and there's aliens-get over it. I remember watching those movies and having half my brain screaming "are you seeing this shit?" at the other half that was telling it to shut up this is important. It even pulls off the elusive "casually spectacular" feel that made Star Wars so captivating. Rogue One tells a genuinely good story, with some genuinely interesting and fresh characters, that genuinely ties into the original trilogy.

It is possible to describe 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9 in a way that makes them SOUND like 4, 5 and 6, and to me it seems as though that must have been what happened: the original trilogy was described - by an eight year old after a can of Red Bull -to someone who had never seen them, who then went and made six more films and a couple of spin off series. Though imperfect, it is unique in that it actually understands what makes a Star Wars film worth making.Įverything else has been an exercise in completely missing the point.
